Supporting Arizona Students Starts at the App Store

Arizona's school leaders see what phones have done to classrooms. Students are more distracted, more anxious, and more exposed to apps and chatbots they have no business using. Whatever the debate looks like in Washington, the consequences end up in our schools.
There is a federal bill worth paying attention to: the App Store Accountability Act. The idea behind it is simple. Apple and Google already know how old their users are. Before a child downloads an app, the app store should have to get a parent's approval first. One step, in one place, by the companies already set up to do it. Parents decide what's appropriate for their kids, and schools get a real partner on the front end of a problem we usually have to manage after the fact.
A second bill in Congress, the Parents Over Platforms Act, takes a much weaker approach. Verification is optional. Companies certify their own compliance. The loopholes that got us here stay open, and kids can keep claiming to be adults to download whatever they want. It's the current system with a new label.
The App Store Accountability Act is the more serious of the two. It keeps parents in charge of what their children can access and puts the responsibility where it belongs. Arizona's education community has good reason to support it, and to ask Senator Kelly and Senator Gallego to do the same.
